Getting Started

Throughout this course, you will be provided with many opportunities to synthesize the project management theories and practices you’ve learned about and apply them to a specific business scenario or challenge. These cases will also require you to reflect upon your experiences that are relevant to project management competencies and processes as well. In this workshop, you will submit a brief analysis of a case scenario for a company experiencing conflict in a diverse project team environment.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Choose appropriate situational strategies for conflict resolution.
  • Evaluate critical interpersonal skills for team management.

Background Information

Now that you have examined conflict resolution strategies and the team management process, you will reflect upon a specific project scenario that requires you to apply the project management concepts and best practices you have learned about in this workshop. You will develop a communication to a hypothetical team that is experiencing conflict. Contemplate the importance of interpersonal skills for project managers who are faced with managing diverse teams experiencing conflict. Demonstrate the valuable knowledge of conflict resolution strategies for project managers, how conflict resolution methods may vary based on the situation, and, also, examine the impact that cultural competencies may have upon teams.


Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Review the following resources, as needed:
    1. PMP Exam Prep, Chapter 9: Resources, “Develop Team”
    2. Agile Fundamentals: A Comprehensive Guide to Using an Agile Approach, Chapter 7: High Performing Teams and Chapter 8: Team Development
    3. Article: Cultural Differences: Knowing the Nine Dimensions of Culture to Succeed in Project Management
    4. Infographic: Conflict Resolution Strategies (JPG)
    5. Videos:
      1. How to Deal with Difficult People (4:36 min) and/or read the How to Deal with Difficult People Transcript (HTML)
      2. How to Resolve Conflict – Project Management (7:27 min) and/or read the How to Resolve Conflict – Project Management Transcript (HTML)
  3. Develop an action plan that you will follow as the project leader to resolve the team behavior challenges.
  4. Assume that you are leading the team that was formed in assignment 2.3 for the hypothetical company, CafeLatte.
  5. The team has been working together for 2 months, and is now experiencing conflict.
    1. The culture of the team has become confrontational.
    2. There are some team members who are not meeting commitments.
    3. Some team members are not working according to the priorities in the project plan.
    4. Team members are not sharing information with one another, and individuals are becoming more competitive than collaborative.
  6. At a minimum, your reflection paper should demonstrate the following:
    1. The importance of leveraging interpersonal skills.
    2. How you will utilize specific conflict resolution strategies
    3. Describe how conflict resolution methods may vary based on the situation or person.
    4. Awareness of the impact that cultural competencies may have upon teams.
  7. Your submission should be a minimum of 350 words.
  8. When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor by the end of the workshop using the quick link or the Activities button.
