Moral injury continues to be prevalent in healthcare settings. Moral injury in healthcare occurs when care providers, while in their line of duty, are expected to make decisions that go against their deep-rooted beliefs and commitment in care provision. Moral injury in healthcare settings results from the different challenges healthcare providers face while providing healthcare services to their patients. Moral injury results in a moral wound and affects the ability of healthcare providers to offer the desired care to their patients.
Different situations may lead to moral injury in healthcare providers. One of such situations is stress and burnout among healthcare providers. Stress and burnout are common in the healthcare practice, especially due to inadequate staffing in practice (Dean & Simon Talbot, 2019). This leads to workload, which causes stress and burnout. Healthcare providers undergoing stress and burnout have increased chances of experiencing a moral injury.
When healthcare providers are overwhelmed with work, they have increased chances of making decisions that do not conform to their deep-rooted commitment to providing quality healthcare services. Stress and burnout may make healthcare providers to be frustrated with their work, therefore, hindering them from performing their duties as expected. When healthcare providers are experiencing burnout due to work overload, they make choices that transgress with their commitment to offering quality care or care that addresses patient needs (Kopacz, Ames & Koenig, 2019). Healthcare providers experiencing burnout have little time to spend examining and taking care of their patients. Spending enough time with patients is an essential aspect of providing quality care. When care providers spend enough time with their patients as recommended, they are able to carry the suitable examinations and assess the correct treatment procedures to suit the needs of the patients.
